Teaching:

My main areas of teaching have been: the history and practice of anthropology in the modern and early modern period (ie. from about 1890 until the present day); the social anthropology of Islam; introduction to Social Anthropology; Anthropology and Philosophy; the Alevis: the anthropology of Turkey and the Balkans.

Examining:

External examiner (BA) successively to the universities of Oxford Brookes (2011-2014); Oxford (2015-2018), and Winchester (2018-21). PhD viva examiner in various universities, perhaps twenty in total in the UK and overseas. 

Fieldwork Morocco (1985); Turkey 1988-1990, 1992-1995, and regularly since that date, mainly amongst the Alevis, and in Konya looking at the understanding of the remains of the past. 2002-3 and subsequent revisits, Germany; 2018; Vienna October 2023-February 2024.
